Program 2014
The Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage and its partners have developed a series of activities involving the implementation of projects, participatory workshops, seminars and training courses. Such activities are designed to preserve and conserve Arab world heritage.
1- Inventory, tentative list and harmonization for a balanced representation of cultural and natural sites
Hiring an expert to document the Upstream nomination process of the Marshlands of Southern Iraq. The resulting report will be presented during the World Heritage Committee meeting in Doha and the IUCN World Parks Congress
Workshop on Wadi Al-Salam Cemetery in Najaf, inscribed on the Tentative List of Iraq, organized by UNESCO and the Centre, and to be held in the Centre in April
2- Sites on the World Heritage List in Danger
First payment for the work to be carried out in the Historic Town of Zabid (based on the report of Dr. Kamal Bitar) and for the architectural and preparatory studies of the project
Hiring an architect to prepare a report that documents the damages in the Ancient City of Aleppo in Syria since the beginning of the conflict, including damaged buildings
Participation of the Centre in the UNESCO initiative to rehabilitate and safeguard Timbuktu (in Mali), inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger. H.E. Sheikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa made a contribution in this regard
Preparation and organization, by the Centre, of an exhibition on World Heritage Sites in Danger in the Arab region to be presented during the World Heritage Committee meeting
3- Management of World Heritage properties
Workshops to be organized in the field of natural heritage at the Centre (Tabe’a Programme with IUCN, in Qatar, Oman , Iraq ...) to be detailed in a separate agreement with IUCN
Workshop on effective law enforcement in natural World Heritage Sites, organized by IUCN and hosted by the Centre in January
Organization of workshops on natural and cultural heritage in cooperation with the Advisory Bodies (IUCN, ICCROM and ICOMOS)
4- Synergy and Integrated Strategy (positioning of the Centre)
Participation of the Centre in the activities of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre with the Arab States Unit throughout the year. to be detailed in a separate agreement with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre
Participation of the Centre in joint activities with the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF), the Nordic World Heritage Foundation (NWHF), the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region (WHITRAP) and ICCROM-ATHAR in Sharjah
Participation of experts from the Arab region and the Centre in the meeting organized in Shanghai
5- Documentation and dissemination of information
Translation of books and technical publications on World Heritage from English or French to Arabic, and funding the cost of printing this material in collaboration with the Arabian Gulf Centre for Information and Documentation in Kuwait and ICCROM-ATHAR in Sharjah
Participation of the Centre’s professional staff in conferences and technical seminars
Attendance of the Centre’s experts at the World Heritage Committee meeting for the organization of side events
Preparation and printing of a brochure about the Centre (e.g. historical background, mission statement, objectives...) prior to the World Heritage Committee meeting
6- Miscellaneous
